1971 concrete

St Kilda Library by Enrico Tagletti, commissioned in 1971 and opened in 1973. These approach steps, clearly influenced by Carlo Scarpa, are to ‘drop boxes’ for returning loaned books when the library is closed. He was awarded the Gold Medal by the RAIA for this and other projects in 2007.

We’ve been cycling past the building almost daily as we ride about Melbourne. It has a more recent extension but the purity of the original design and interior still stands the tests of time.

The angled exterior concrete wall planes continue as a motif into the interior detailing and door openings, of which I’ll post more shortly.
