Tunnels

So many.

We exited this one after 5.7kms. Some sections are open sided forming concrete colonnades of light and shadow over the roadway’s central golden yellow dividing line. They make beautiful linear curving spaces with glimpses to the outside world of sun lit mountain gorges and torrents of cascading water.

When enclosed the noise of traffic can be deafening, amplified by the tunnel’s geometry and giving no sense of the direction of a vehicle’s approach.

We need our lights both to be seen and to navigate the road surface a head of us. Sometimes there’s a pavement we can escape to but more often than not this is too narrow for our ladened bicycles.
